How Long Keratin Lasts

In Miami, smoothing is not a luxury service — for a lot of people it is the difference between doing their hair in the morning and giving up on it. But there is more misinformation about keratin than almost anything else we offer, so here is a straight answer to the two questions everyone asks.

How long it lasts

A full keratin treatment lasts roughly three to five months. An express smoothing treatment lasts about six to eight weeks.

That range is wide because it depends on things we can predict at the consultation:

How you wash it. Sulfates strip the treatment faster than anything else. A sulfate-free shampoo is not an upsell here, it is the whole maintenance plan. Washing less often extends it further.

How coarse your hair is. Coarse, resistant hair holds a smoothing treatment longer than fine hair does.

Salt and chlorine. Both strip it early. If you are in the ocean or a pool several times a week, expect the shorter end of the range.

How much frizz you started with. The more the treatment had to do, the sooner you notice it wearing off.

It also does not fall off a cliff. Keratin fades gradually — you get a slow return of texture rather than a sudden reversion, which is one of the nicer things about it.

Does it damage your hair?

The honest answer: a keratin treatment is not a damaging service in the way lightening is, but it is not nothing either.

What it actually does is coat and smooth the hair’s outer layer, then seal it with heat. It is not breaking and rebuilding internal bonds the way a relaxer does. That is a real and important distinction — keratin is not a chemical straightener, and it will not permanently alter your curl pattern.

Where damage does happen, it is almost always one of three things:

1. The flat iron pass. Sealing requires high heat. Done on hair already compromised by lightening, that heat is the risk — not the keratin.
2. Doing it too often. Repeated treatments stacked on the same hair build up and dull it. Three to five months apart exists for a reason.
3. Doing it on hair that should not have it. Very fragile, over-processed or heavily lightened hair sometimes should not take the heat at all.

We assess condition before we book you. If your hair is not in a state to take it, we will say so and suggest a bond or protein treatment first. Turning that appointment down costs us a booking and saves you your hair.

The formaldehyde question

People are right to ask, and the answer deserves better than a brush-off.

Traditional keratin treatments have historically relied on formaldehyde or compounds that release it under heat — which is what produced the fumes and the reputation.

If you want a formaldehyde-free option, ask for PRO Addiction. That is the direct answer, and it is the one we give in the salon. It is $575 and about two hours, and it is also the most restorative of our smoothing treatments — so if your hair is both frizzy and damaged from lightening, it is frequently the right recommendation on its own merits, formaldehyde question aside.

If this matters to you — and it particularly should if you are pregnant or nursing — say so when you book and we will put you on that formula. This is the one service where we would rather you asked more questions, not fewer.

Which one you actually want

We offer several, and they are genuinely different services:

• Keratin — $450, about two hours. The full treatment. Real frizz control for three to five months while keeping your natural texture. This is the one most people mean.
• KC Express Smoothing — $250, about two hours. Lighter, less commitment, softer result. For hair that behaves most days and misbehaves in August.
• Keratin-Infused Blow Out — $150, about an hour. Not a smoothing treatment. A blow-out with keratin worked through it, lasting a few washes. Good before an event.
• PRO Addiction Smoothing — $575, about two hours. The most restorative option, for hair that needs repair as well as smoothing.
• Men’s Keratin — $250, about an hour.

The mistake we see most often is booking the express treatment hoping for full-keratin results, then feeling let down at week seven. If your hair is genuinely difficult in humidity, the full treatment is the honest recommendation.

What smoothing does and does not do

It will: cut frizz dramatically, shorten your styling time, make hair easier to blow out, add shine, and help color-treated hair look less dull.

It will not: make curly hair straight — it loosens and relaxes, but a smoothing treatment is not a relaxer; repair damage, though PRO Addiction comes closest; survive daily sulfate shampoo; or replace a haircut. If your ends are wrecked, smoothing them makes shiny wrecked ends.

Why we carry four different keratins

Most salons carry one. We carry four different brands of keratin treatment, plus PRO Addiction.

That is a function of size and time rather than anything clever: we are a large team that has been here since 2009, and keratin companies want their product in a salon with that many chairs and that much traffic. It means we get to trial formulas from several companies and keep only the ones that actually perform — and it means your stylist is choosing between four options for your specific hair rather than applying the only one in the cupboard.

Coarse resistant hair, fine hair that goes limp under a heavy formula, hair that has been lightened to within an inch of its life, and hair that just frizzes in August are four different problems. They should not all get the same bottle.

The Miami-specific part

Humidity works by swelling the hair shaft and roughing up the cuticle — that is frizz, mechanically. Smoothing seals the cuticle so there is less for humidity to get into. It is the most direct answer to this climate we have.

Which is also why timing matters. Coming in at the start of the humid stretch buys you the whole season. Coming in at the end of it means paying full price for the tail.
