About eight miles. Either inland on the William Lehman Causeway and Federal Highway, or straight down A1A through Golden Beach — twenty-five to thirty minutes.
There are two honest ways to make this drive and residents genuinely choose between them. Inland is quicker: west on the William Lehman Causeway, south on Federal Highway and Biscayne Boulevard, then back east. A1A is slower and better looking: straight down South Ocean Drive, through the mile of low houses that is Golden Beach, into Sunny Isles and on to us. In the season, the inland route usually wins.
Hallandale Beach has been a winter home for Quebec for more than fifty years — enough that the area is called Little Quebec and the city has been nicknamed Canada’s southernmost city. There is a real French-speaking population here for a good part of the year. We were founded by French hairdressers, French is spoken in this room daily, and the vocabulary that matters in a color consultation is the vocabulary people are least comfortable translating. If you would rather have that conversation in French, ask.
The city is dense and largely vertical, and a good deal of the condominium stock dates from the 1960s and 70s, sitting alongside new luxury towers along the ocean. Most Hallandale households already drive south through Aventura for the mall, the schools and the restaurants they like. Bal Harbour is a modest extension of a trip you are already making, not a new one.
