A French salon, on the third level
Red Market has been on the third level of Bal Harbour Shops since 2009 — long enough to be a habit for the barrier island rather than a stop for the season. It is open seven days a week, which matters in a city where a Saturday appointment is often the only one that fits.
Being French here is not a theme. It is where the two owners were formed: Jean Marc Durante was born in Lyon and trained with Jacques Dessange; Reynald Ricard began his career in Paris at eighteen, at Maniatis, Frank Provost and then Dessange, before bringing that training to New York and finally to Miami.
What French training changes in the chair
In France, cutting and coloring are separate disciplines with separate qualifications — a stylist specializes. That is why the work here is divided the same way: Jean Marc cuts and styles, Reynald colors. You are not getting one artist doing both badly; you are getting two people who trained for one thing.
The color is the visible half. Balayage is French for “to sweep”, and the method is freehand: lightener painted where the light would naturally lift, no foils boxing it into sections, no formula pulled off a shelf. A full head is $395, a partial $250, a face frame $225 — and every color service opens with a complimentary fifteen-minute consultation, so the price and the plan are agreed before anything is mixed.
Where the French-speaking guests come from
Bal Harbour draws a French-speaking population for a good part of the year, and the vocabulary that matters most in a color consultation — balayage, dégradé, ombré, coiffeur — is the vocabulary people are least comfortable translating. Ask at the desk and it will be answered in French.
The makeup room follows the same thread: Melodie, who leads it, is originally from France and came to Miami by way of London and a decade of editorial work for Chanel, Dior and Harrods.
The French-trained owners

Frequently asked
Is Red Market a French hair salon?
Yes. It was founded by French hairdressers and has been at Bal Harbour Shops since 2009. Jean Marc Durante was born in Lyon and trained with Jacques Dessange; Reynald Ricard began in Paris at eighteen, at Maniatis, Frank Provost and Dessange. French is spoken at the desk daily.
Do the stylists speak French?
French is spoken in the salon daily. If you would rather have a color consultation in French — the vocabulary of balayage, dégradé and ombré is easier to be precise in — say so when you book and the appointment is placed with the right artist.
How much is French balayage in Miami?
A full head is $395, a partial head $250 and a face frame $225. Every color service begins with a complimentary fifteen-minute consultation, so the plan and the price are confirmed before the color is mixed.
