Four and a half miles. The Broad Causeway begins at the same intersection as the Shops, so it is close to a straight line — fifteen to twenty minutes.
Of everywhere we serve on the mainland, North Miami is the shortest trip, and the reason is a piece of luck in the map. The Broad Causeway starts at 96th Street, the same corner as Bal Harbour Shops. You come off the causeway and you have arrived. Two honest warnings: the causeway is tolled in both directions and takes electronic payment only, and it has a drawbridge that opens on its own schedule. Neither is a reason not to come, but they are the difference between fifteen minutes and twenty-five.
North Miami is the seventh-largest city in Miami-Dade, about sixty thousand people, and it has a large Haitian American community — the city has elected Haitian-born mayors since 2001. We are a French-founded salon and French is spoken in this room every day, so a consultation here does not have to happen in your second language. The city is also changing faster than its reputation. There is old waterfront money at Keystone Point, where the canals are a hundred feet wide and most of the houses have a dock; there is a contemporary art museum on NE 125th Street that puts on a free outdoor jazz night on the last Friday of the month; and there is SoLe Mia off Biscayne Boulevard, where more than a thousand people now live on ground that used to be a landfill. The former Johnson and Wales campus nearby is being redeveloped. It is not the same city it was ten years ago.

- It is a small toll each way, electronic only, and it buys you the shortest route to the Shops from anywhere in North Miami. Residents who cross daily use the causeway pass plan; for an occasional appointment the standard toll is the simpler option.
