Miami Shores is a village in the legal sense and behaves like one. It was laid out in 1924 as an attempt at what its developers called America’s Mediterranean, stopped dead by the 1926 hurricane, and finished later — which is why the housing runs to Mediterranean revival and mid-century single-family under a heavier tree canopy than anywhere near it. A piece of trivia most residents enjoy: the city now called North Miami was originally incorporated as Miami Shores, and had to give the name back.

The Village’s reputation for caring about how it looks is not a stereotype, it is a matter of public record. When a couple who had grown vegetables in their front yard for seventeen years fell foul of a 2013 ordinance, the case went all the way to the Florida Supreme Court, and the legislature eventually settled it in 2019 by making such bans unenforceable statewide. We mention it fondly. A village that particular about its own frontage tends to be particular about a haircut too.

The trip is one of the easiest we have. The Broad Causeway starts at 96th Street, the Shops’ own corner, so it is close to a straight line east — tolled both ways, electronic payment only, with a drawbridge that occasionally has an opinion. NE 2nd Avenue is one of the few genuine park-and-walk shopping streets in this part of the county, so Shores guests tend to arrive with realistic expectations about parking, and the Shops’ garage is a pleasant surprise.
